From Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar to Jadon Sancho, Bernardo Silva and Vinicius Junior, everybody wants to know what gear pros wear when showcasing their talents in huge stages such as the World Cup, Champions League, Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga and La Liga.
Playing every match in front of worldwide audiences eager for their next move, pros are always pressured to perform. As there’s not much space for failure they surround themselves with the best there is – teammates, coaches and gear, such as boots, shin guards and grip socks.
When it comes to boots, they pick and use one from their sponsor. It’s a commercial deal, but with high-end technology, top and lightweight materials, big brands are the ones with the best boots out there so top players are well equipped. The industry giants completely rule the boot market – both with pros, casual and amateur players.
It’s a different story when it comes to not-usually visible on TV football equipment, such as shin guards. On that pros opt for the best product in the market even if it’s not produced by their boot sponsor. Check it out:

Pros look for two things when it comes to shin guards: comfort and protection. They don’t want one without the other. They must feel protected but don’t want to have something bothering them right in the legs – like shin guards bouncing when they run, pass and shoot. That’s why they choose lightweight comfortable materials, with soft cushioning and perfect fit.
There’s another factor that influences pro footballers choice for a specific shin guard and it’s one more reason why they wear SAK: besides it’s perfect fit, lightweight and comfortable materials, they layout can be customised. Be it a cartoon, family images or one inspiring alternative layout, pros like to have a custom designed shin guard that inspires them on the pitch.

Different players, different styles. Some players want a bigger shin guard – one that covers a bigger part of his leg – while others want it as small as possible. Former Manchester United Dutch winger Memphis Depay, who currently plays for Olympique Lyonnais in Ligue 1, takes it to extreme with a custom made SAK shin that covers only a small bit of his shin. Pogba goes in a different direction with a medium sized SAK shin guard. You can read more about how to wear shin guards in this post. (link to following week blog post when published)
